Astrobotic Technology
Pittsburgh lunar lander company whose Peregrine Mission One (January 2024) carried NASA hydrogen- and volatile-measuring instruments but never reached the Moon after a propulsion failure; NASA removed VIPER from Griffin following its July 2024 decision to discontinue the rover project, while stating that Griffin Mission One would continue within Astrobotic's NASA contract. Voyager Technologies completed its acquisition of Astrobotic in July 2026 and states the business now operates as Voyager Lunar Systems.
Resources and evidence
Each resource shows the highest step primary sources support. How the ladder works.
| Resource | Evidence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Water ice | Targeted | mission aimed at it |
| Volatiles | Targeted | mission aimed at it |
Demonstrated
Launched Peregrine Mission One on 2024-01-08 carrying NASA's Neutron Spectrometer System, Near-Infrared Volatile Spectrometer System and Peregrine Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer; the instruments collected in-flight data only because a propellant-system failure prevented a landing and the spacecraft re-entered Earth's atmosphere on 2024-01-18. No lunar resource measurement was made. Acquired Masten Space Systems' assets in 2022.
Claimed or planned
Astrobotic's manifest describes NIRVSS as measuring resources that could potentially be mined from the Moon. NASA lists the Ames/Interlune METAL investigation on Griffin-1, planned for late 2026, to study helium-3 abundance in lunar regolith. Voyager states that Peregrine-2 and Peregrine-3 are scheduled for 2028 with NASA-directed payloads; that delivery plan is not an achieved resource result.
